You’ve probably seen countless "ready-made, universal" wardrobe capsules circulating online - like ‘Basic Wardrobe Capsule,’ ‘The Ultimate Summer Capsule Wardrobe,’ or other similar collections.
Do you like these wardrobe capsules? Do you rely on them to build your wardrobe or use them for inspiration? I hope you’re NOT. Why not?
Let’s take one of those, the ‘Fall-Winter Wardrobe Capsule,’ for example…

Take a closer look at this capsule.

What’s Wrong with This "Ready-Made, Universal" Wardrobe Capsule?

Here are a few reasons:

1. Your Wardrobe Should Be Unique to You

Everyone’s basic wardrobe is different and should be tailored to your natural features and specific needs.
When it comes to capsule wardrobe colors, it’s not just about black, beige, and white. Depending on your unique coloring (or color season), you’ll need different shades of gray, blue, brown, and more.

2. Style That’s Anything but Boring

A basic wardrobe doesn’t mean plain or predictable. It should include interesting color combinations, not just the usual black, beige, and white.

3. Is “Universal” Really Universal?

I don’t believe in ‘universal’ when it comes to style.
Everyone has their own look, and that should shine through in their wardrobe.

Take this wardrobe capsule, for example - while it may seem practical, it relies heavily on black, which only suits Winter colorings (especially Shaded Winter).

For the other 3 colorings (or color seasons), it’s either about finding flattering alternatives or using professional techniques to make black work without compromising your natural beauty.

Why Doesn’t This Capsule Cut It, And What Makes Each Item A Potential Wardrobe Mistake?

If these bottoms (pants, jeans, skirts, etc.) can be considered somewhat universal,

the same cannot be said for the tops (shirts, blouses, jackets, dresses, etc.). Some of them won’t suit the same body type.

For example:

This black jacket and beige coat will work well for tall women or when paired with high heels.

This short jacket with flaps is suitable for petite women and those with a smaller bust.

This knitted long-sleeve top with draping around the bust is best for women with a medium-sized bust.

Now, let’s examine this capsule in terms of fashion styles.

To put it simply, they fall short.

For the most part, generic and depersonalized pieces dominate (though this is typical of mass fashion today). While these items can be paired with statement accessories - such as earrings, brooches, scarves, or pendants that reflect a distinct image - this capsule includes only one heart-shaped pendant, which also can’t be considered a “universal” accessory.

When it comes to fashion styles, there are a few pieces with some "character" or "personality": the knitted long-sleeve top with draping around the bust, the silk, lingerie-style skirt, and the heart-shaped pendant. These items could work in an outfit in the sexual fashion style. However, such an outfit would require pairing with high heels, and this capsule only includes ballet flats, which don't complement this look.

There’s also a denim shirt with some "character" that could be used to create an outfit in the tomboy or cowboy fashion styles.

However, neither the sexual nor the tomboy/cowboy fashion styles are flattering or suitable for everyone.

Now let's look at the shape of the handbags.

The black flap bag has rounded lines, while the beige one has angular lines.

Just above the beige bag with angular lines, you can see sunglasses with a similar shape, featuring sharp corners. Naturally, they pair well with each other - the beige flap bag and the sunglasses. They also complement the angular lapels of the black jacket and beige coat.

However, the beige flap bag and the sunglasses do not coordinate with the beige sweater, as it has a soft, rounded shoulder line.

Do you see now why those internet-famous capsules fall short?
Do you see now why there’s no such thing as a “universal” wardrobe that suits everyone for every occasion?

And this is not something unimportant or minor!

If you buy items from this capsule wardrobe or similar ones, you’ll end up wasting money and filling your closet with unworn pieces.

Remember: everyone’s wardrobe should be unique, whether it’s a basic wardrobe or a capsule wardrobe!

If you’re not chasing trends and you understand what personal style really is, then you know there are no “universal” styles or “cookie-cutter,” “one-size-fits-all” solutions that flatter everyone.

What works for you won’t suit your neighbor, mother, or friend, because everyone has different body shapes, facial features, lifestyles, and more.

We are all unique, and for your wardrobe to truly suit and flatter you:

1) Clothing and accessory lines should match the natural lines of your face and body.
2) Clothing and accessory colors should complement the hues of your appearance.

So, how can this wardrobe capsule - or others like it - really be considered “basic” or “universal”?
The internet-famous "Ultimate, Ready-Made, Universal, Versatile" wardrobe capsule is just a myth, appealing only because it seems easy.

But I know you’re not looking for easy, “cookie-cutter” solutions that won’t work for you. Smart, self-aware women want wardrobe pieces that flatter their features, enhance their appearance, and reflect their individuality.

That’s exactly the method I use with my clients. I teach them how to break free from mass fashion and create a personal style and brand based on their unique facial and body features.

For a long time, I almost stopped doing wardrobe edits. I honestly thought they were inefficient. Why spend time digging through old clothes?
